Approvals & Testing

Intrinsic safety

Potentially explosive atmospheres result from an accumulation of flammable gases, mists or vapours or by combustible dusts and fibres. Products used in these areas must not be capable of igniting any flammable or combustible substance.

Electrical and mechanical products intended for use in a potentially explosive atmosphere may require compliance with the ATEX Directive, and bear the Ex mark.

Testing and certification of products ensures that they are not an ignition source when operating in a potentially explosive atmosphere.

Certification ensures that the equipment or protective system is fit for its intended purpose and that adequate information is supplied with it to ensure that it can be used safely.

Certain PSM products are certified intrinsically safe for use in hazardous areas when used with an approved safety barrier.

Marine Type Approvals

Marine type approvals provide unbiased, third-party verification of product conformity to predefined specifications, and national and international standards.

They assist in ensuring an appropriate level of product quality/safety is achieved, inspiring confidence among customers.

Our products are applied to the marine industry worldwide and carry Type Approvals from marine societies including:

American Bureau of Shipping

Lloyds Register of Shipping

Bureau Veritas

Det Norske Veritas

Where it is a requirement of supply, transmitters are approved to specific regional or industry standards.

EMC Testing

PSM products have also been independently certified for EMC performance.

EMC testing (electromagnetic compatibility testing) applies to electronic and electro-mechanical products such as ours. Certified EMC testing evaluates product for any harmful emissions and determines potential susceptibility to stray RF (radio frequency).

Many of our products have been tested to the following standards:

EN50081-2-1993

EN6100-6-2-2001

EN60945:2002

DEF STAN 59-41 Part 3 Issue 1 16th May 2003 Ships below decks limits

Environmental Testing

What is Environmental testing? - Vibration testing, Shock Testing, Climatic Testing and Ingress Protection

Environmental testing is often a contractual requirement demanded by the defence and marine industries, where safety and reliability are of the utmost importance. In some cases environmental testing is a specific customer requirement but PSM look to environmental testing to ensure suitability, reliability and longevity of its product.

Many of our products have been tested to the following standards:

IEC 60068-2-2

IEC 60068-2-30

IEC 60068-2-6

IEC 60092-505

NES 08-123 Issue 1 NES 1004 Issue 2 Datasheets 13, 9, 36 & 25
